Our team standing proud as national Ki O Rahi champions after the Matariki tournament in Rāhui Pōkeka
Preparations for the national competition was disrupted this year due to the encroachment into the winter sport season and illness. Nonetheless, the team and coaches were determined to front up and put their best foot forward.
Following an entertaining pōwhiri, the preliminary rounds began. The fields were a challenge with some like a swamp rather than a playing surface, but that didn't dampen the spirits of the team. The depth in talent allowed coaches to rotate players and present a new challenge for each game they faced. Playing at the top level with minimal preparation was alleviated by clear strategy, decisive play and flair.
Semi-final qualification quickly came around on day two. Te Kūiti were tough opponents, and passions ran high with each team determined to take away the grand prize.
Ultimately, Hamilton Boys' and Girls' progressed to the grand final to meet Te Wharekura o Rākaumanga once again. The game was very tight. Our opponents developed a defensive strategy that shut down our exciting brand of game, which forced the team to re-think, adapt and execute. The game was tight, right up until the fourth quarter. When the final whistle blew, Hamilton Boys' and Girls' came out on top!
A huge thank you to our coaching team, made up of alumni and whānau of both schools. Without their support, this great achievement would not have been possible.
