From the Principal's Desk

Our Principal, Marie Gordon, shares about the wider life of our kura, and thanks two Senior Leadership Team members who have recently left to pursue exciting new opportunities.

Hamilton Girls’ High School has a robust and fast paced environment. On any day we are leading, participating, working, competing, performing - that’s both our students and our teachers. It is amazing when you see students and staff working together and in my mind, this reflects a community that is highly invested in learning and aspiring together - a community that is built on strong relationships. It is wonderful to be alongside our students as they discover what they and their peers can do with effort, persistence and high expectations.

The past term we have been privileged to experience not only success, but hard work and determination in many co-curricular events. While academic learning should always be at the forefront of what we do, many memories are etched through the wonderful co- and extra curricular activities in our kura. From debating to dance, Kapa Haka to sport, Pasifika performance to speech competitions, our students have continued to excel both in and outside of school.

Our Executive Council demonstrates leadership  through the organisation of amazing events to ensure our students are participating in the wider life of school. They also organise academic tutorials and impart their knowledge and wisdom to their younger peers. All Year 12 students should have received job descriptions and details about the application process for the 2023 Executive Council positions. It is important that the deadline for applications is met.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome and congratulate Jordan Devoy as 2022/2023 BOT Student Representative. This will be Jordan’s first term on the Board, and we are confident in her ability to represent her fellow students.

Finally, I would like to add my thanks to two Senior Leadership Team members who have left HGHS to pursue other areas outside of the secondary school sector. Rebecca Early is an outstanding visionary leader who has chosen to share her knowledge with the Ministry of Education, and Matua Toti West will be part of the exciting team for the national body of Kapa Haka: Te Matatini, Ngā Kapa Haka Kura Tuarua; and Te Mana Kuratahi. On behalf of the school community, I want to thank Mrs Early and Matua Toti for their contribution to HGHS. I will always be thankful to the Senior Leadership Team who helped lead our school through a pandemic, ensuring that our vision and values, and our students, are at the centre of our decision making process.

Best wishes to all for a safe, rejuvenating and happy term break.
