This month's edition introduces Greer Sydney, 1983 Sports Captain, who returned a few years ago as Head of the English Faculty.

Name and background
Greer Sydney (Leonhart). I was born in Palmerston North, where my father’s first teaching job in New Zealand was at Palmerston North Boys’ High School. I spent a short time as a toddler in Huntly before moving to Hamilton at the age of 5. My father was a teacher and HOD of PE at HBHS. All my school years were spent in Hamilton.

Your last year at HGHS
1983

What is it that you currently do outside of school?
I have played hockey for the last 45 years and still play, but more socially. I have played for the same club for 20 years.

What was your favourite thing about being a student at HGHS?
Being a part of a unique community. I loved the sport and the opportunities to be involved in all sports. I didn’t particularly enjoy the classroom, but I loved those sports exchanges and the bus trips.

What was your greatest accomplishment at school as a student and why?
I attained the position of Sports Captain at school. My sporting achievements included selection for Waikato Under 18 Hockey and Waikato Women's Hockey in my last year of school. Heads House won the House Cup in my final year (nothing has changed). Passing Calculus and English in “Form 7” Bursary was another highlight.

What do you enjoy most about being a staff member at HGHS?
I came back to Hamilton Girls' High in 1999 and stayed on staff until 2007. Then I returned after teaching at HBHS for 9 years, to become HOD of English. I love being a part of such a vibrant, innovative and caring Department.

What advice would you give to current students?
School is a chance to find out who you are, and what sort of person you want to grow to be. It’s a chance to push your comfort zone. Love what you do. If it's not a passion, don’t do it.
