Advancing Digitally

Technology has advanced in a variety of ways that can now help and provide support to many people worldwide, ranging from educational resources available from around the world, to providing direct communication between people in separate states and countries.

Communication:

Through many years, we have continued to develop a plethora of different forms of communication, one being video call. At the start of 2020 we were all hit with sudden lockdowns around the world, potentially putting schools to an abrupt standstill if it weren’t for current technology. We were able to work around the obstacles of having to stay at home by communicating through online conferences, where classes would hold meetings within the schoology website to mimic a normal class period. Teachers were also able to assign work remotely for the students to complete digitally, similar to the work assigned during a normal school day. This advancement in technology made it so that we were able to communicate and come in contact with those we weren’t able to see on a daily basis, such as our friends and extended family. This technology meant we had a reliable means of communication, either through email or even conference calls, to contact teachers.

Education:

Education has developed immensely over time, and has come to the point that a majority of the work we do in class is done digitally, and taught using digital media such as google documents and slides. Because of the sudden change that took place in 2020, more assignments and exams were made to be completed digitally in case of further lockdowns. This has helped benefit students who are away from school due to any reason such as an illness or family loss. They are able to find the work that they have missed online through the schoology websites or by contacting their teachers. With this new flexible way of learning, people who are unable to attend class can work through missed work or assignments in order to catch up quickly. The internet has an abundance of free resources available to students and staff that offer a range of different learning methods for students who may find it difficult to learn through traditional forms of teaching in school. Research has been made easier with the use of new age technology due to the wide range of information found solely through Google. This search engine has made school assignments and personal projects much less time consuming and of a higher standard.

Online Information:

The creation of numerous websites aids our learning everyday at school. Such sites include:

Schoology - Where teachers can notify students of updates in the classroom or set work that they can complete if they are absent. Notes are also kept in one secure place which students can refer back to at any time. Interactive forums can also be formed for students and teachers to interact remotely with questions and responses about particular topics.

HGHS Website - Primarily used for students within the school, as we are able to check if there are any events that might be taking place that week or in the near future, located in the notices section. Student achievements are also published on the site allowing the public to acknowledge and be informed of our successes.

Kamar Portal - Students are able to view their weekly timetable with the addition of having the option to view their grades, overall NCEA results and reports. This can help students optimise their time and track their progress throughout the year.
