Mid-Year Report on Student Progress and Achievements

At the last Board meeting on 5th August Mr Wilcox presented the Mid-Year Report on student progress and achievements in the core learning areas of Reading, Writing and Maths. These are collated from OTJs (Overall Teacher Judgements) as well as from data entered into our PaCT system.

The objective is to increase the % of students achieving within or beyond their curriculum level in these 3 core learning areas, with targets to accelerate the progress of students who are not achieving at their expected curriculum level in certain year groups. Objectives are based on end of year data as well as deep discussions between the teaching staff.

When looking at mid-year data it is important to remember that the objective is annual, so we are still ‘working towards’. However the data already shows some clear trends, and these are just a few examples of how the Board use this data to make strategic decisions, and how teaching teams can check if their programmes are working or not.

  • Year 6 and Year 7 both show an increase in progress and achievements for Writing and Maths, but a slight decrease in progress and achievements for Reading which shows us that the investment last year in Prime Maths has been beneficial and validates the investment in Structured Literacy that will happen across the school in 2022.

  • Year 4 data shows lots of positive progress and achievement, with 74% achieving level 2 or above in reading (progressing from 47% a year ago), and 93% achieving level 2 or above in maths (progressing from 81% a year ago). There was a slight drop in progress and achievement for writing so this flags a need to help guide teacher’s programmes and enable greater student achievement.

  • The report also provides data on our target students who are not achieving at their expected curriculum level in each core subject and have received some form of accelerated learning. We were happy to see some positive progress and achievements here too, with 63 – 92 % of these students making progress or accelerated progress across the 3 core subjects. This section also breaks down the data for our Maori and Pasifika students so we can report directly to these communities.

Part of our AKO Strategic Plan is to improve understanding and consistent use of school wide assessment. This has been supported by professional development at recent teacher-only days, so the data will become even more valid and consistent in the future, which in turn highlights specific needs in certain student groups and/or subject areas.

Our next Board Meeting is 6pm Thursday 30th September in the School meeting room.
