Term 2 Inquiry: Te Tihi-o-maru (Timaru) - Past to Present (Social Sciences)

It is definitely cooling down these days as we head into winter but the learning is continuing this term with our focus being the Social Sciences. As a team, we are looking at Te Tihi-o-maru (Timaru), Past to Present. Kea (R5), Kiwi (R5), Pukeko (R4) and Tui (R3) visited the Timaru Library and South Canterbury Museum last week. The fantastic team of Librarians helped us understand how Aoraki and his brothers went out in their waka and met with tragedy, having their waka overturn. This is the the local narrative of how Aoraki (Mt. Cook) and surrounding mountains were formed. To continue our learning, two extremely knowledgeable educators at South Canterbury Museum continued the story and were able to tell us about the first pioneers that arrived in Timaru. Back at school over the following weeks, the learning will continue and we hope to involve whānau along the way.
