Let's take a walk

Ryan Cox —

Depending on when you left Hillcrest High School things could have changed quite a bit around the place. Check it out below

Many students would have been here since 1985 when the Morrison Memorial Theatre (Auditorium) was opened. This is named after former Principal Des Morrison (1972-1980)

At the beginning of 2024 former Principal Kelvin Whiting (2003-2023) officially opened our new ILC (Independent Living Centre) building. What an amazing space it is, check it out below:

Our School Library is still a bustling place even with the introduction of technology. Our Librarian Mrs. Duke and her team do an amazing job at engaging with our students. Most lunchtimes you will find activities such as Book Club and Mending Club.

Our Hospitality and Food and Nutrition classes have had an upgrade too. Check out our Yr. 9 students baking cookies under the guidance of Food Teacher Mr. McNabb.

The area outside of the Library last year had an upgrade and we now refer to this area as the Magnolia Tree Courtyard. This is a popular place at breaktime and is often used for Market Days and festivals such as the Autumn Gala.

Our updated Music Rooms have practice rooms for our students to rehearse and prepare for any upcoming music events.

We have a new state of the art Careers Centre. In a changing world where University is not always the best option we have a specialist team of staff members who work with our students to find the best pathway for them. Career Services provides students with access to the following services:

  • One-on-one career consultation

  • Career taster courses

  • Gateway work experience placements

  • Access to enrolment in level 1 university papers (from all New Zealand universities)

  • Information and advice on study options including subject selection for university, polytechnic and Te wananga

  • Information on apprenticeships

  • Information on jobs including job market data

  • Short courses in a range of interest areas that include NCEA unit standard credits

  • Technical and Vocational education and Training (TVET) timetabled classes to match students’ vocational requirements and obtain NCEA unit standard credits

The front of school now has the school Haka on the welcoming doors, this is the first thing you see when you come to the administration block.

Our Technology rooms are still bringing lots of joy to our students. We offer:

  • Metal

  • Wood

  • DVC

  • Food and Nutrition

  • Hospitality

  • Early Childhood

  • Fabrics
