Chess Power Nationals Championship

On the weekend of October 21 the Hillcrest High School Chess team travelled to Auckland for the Chess Power National Championships.

All together there were 19 schools participating from all over the country, including our main local rivals HBHS. The Hillcrest High School team, consisting of Jim Morgan, Noah Hsiao, Aryan Lal, Seneth Seresinhe, Zaidyn Raru, Ranuga Ekanayake Mudiyanselage and Almas Khan played extremely well and placed fourth overall. First place went to One Tree Hill College, while HBHS came in second.

Stand outs in the individual rankings were Ranuga (8th), Almas (16th) and Jim (27th). Often Hillcrest High School is prevented from participating in National Chess tournaments by having to get past HBHS in the regional qualifiers, so it was great to get the chance to compete against schools from around the country and prove our worth on the National stage.
