Puuhoro Waananga Term One

On Monday 25th March, fifteen Y11 and Y12 students attended the Puuhoro Waananga, which was held at Claudelands Events Centre.

Students partook in three workshops during the day. In partnership with Engineering New Zealand and the Matatā Initiative, Pūhoro STEMM created pūrākau-based science and engineering challenges and delivered these nation-wide to partner schools. Across the day, tauira were supported to breathe life into pūrakau and work through the STEM challenges associated with them.

The challenges included:

Rona me Marama:

In this challenge, tauira were required to construct a hydraulic arm and use it to pick up Rona and place her on a raised platform.

This is in reference to the pūrākau where Rona cursed at Marama who reached out and took her high into the sky to reside with him.

Ngā Hau o Tāwhirimātea:

This task relates to the pūrākau of Tāwhirimātea's contributions in the creation of Hineahuone. This challenge required tauira to construct a wind powered model. Just as Tawhirimatea gave Hineahuone her respiratory system, our tauira harnessed the power of wind and made their wind models walk.

Ngā Mata o te Ariki:

This challenge required tauira to use digital technology to retell Matariki narratives. They used block coding and microbits to move mini robots along a storyline which described the importance of each of the stars in Matariki.

A huge thanks to Mr Ben Smith, one of our wonderful Technology teachers, for accompanying and transporting the aakonga to the event.
