Stunning new sports’ complex
Started in May 2023 and due for completion in November 2024, our new gymnasium and associated facilities has reached some significant milestones.
In consultation with local iwi, the complex has been given the name Te Kōmata o Te Rangi (The Pinnacle in the Sky). The two classrooms are Manawaroa (resilience) and Ngākau Mākahi (humility with heart); the conditioning space is Mārohi (strength, power); and honouring Graham Leslie, a long-serving Deputy Principal and basketball coach, the two full-size courts with seating for 250 people are Lesile 1 and Leslie 2.
While the gymnasium has been funded by the Ministry of Education, the adjacent five-bay garage Outdoor Education Hub has come about through school, business, community and whānau contributions.
As part of the landscaping, a significant swale, designed to assist with drainage, stormwater management and in clearing sediments and contaminants, is sited next to the complex.
In mid-June, the Environment Committee led our Year 10 students in planting 1,500 native plants. The students got to demonstrate our school goal of Tūrangawaewae (a sense of belonging, a place to stand) by restoring the whenua closer to its original wetland state
