As a part of the Achievement Standard work on the issue of Food Security for NZ Whānau and Society students were spoken to by the CEO of Food Bank, given a tour and put to work at the Canterbury Food Bank premises on Kilmarnock Street in Riccarton.

Canterbury Food Bank is a not-for-profit organisation supporting households throughout Canterbury.  They rescue high quality and nourishing food, which is destined for land fill.  They organise, package and transport it to other organisations (including homeless shelters, soup kitchens, after-school programmes, centers for veterans, and those organisations supporting clients with addiction) that provide meals to those in need.  The students  volunteer work included boxing potatoes and carrots, bagging silverbeet/bok choy/rhubarb/spinach, sorting and boxing bread items and relocating cans from crates to shelves.

The trip was a chance to both gather evidence for upcoming assessment and to support not-for-profit organisations working in our communities.
