What's happened this month in the Careers Department

HHS —

An update from the Careers Department on what's been happening this month with many students attending courses!

An ideal course for someone who wants to get into fixing cars!

Riley had the opportunity this term to spend three days at Avon City Training Services learning about practical wheels and vehicle inspection. He enjoyed this hands-on experience STAR course and has signed up to an Advanced Automotive course in August as a result. He feels he can now balance a car wheel correctly and has the attitude to succeed in an apprenticeship. Anyone who does not take Auto at school should see Ms Pat Agnew in E7 to learn more about this course.

STAR 2D Animation Course @Yoobee College of Creative Innovation

Seven ākonga who study Art with Ms Carolyn Eng decided to enrol in a 2D Animation Course in the April holidays to increase their Photoshop and Adobe skills. They each had to create a character, give it specific features and then make it move. Sounds simple? Well, it actually takes effort and ability to design a unique character and learn to make your character ‘walk’ smoothly. The course is recommended for those who want to learn basic animation skills, tweening and using a drawing tablet effectively. While all participants received a certificate, a special congratulations go to Ayush Sami who designed and animated his character to the highest standard. As a result he won a Yoobee Colleges Creative Excellence Award and received a certificate, letter of commendation and Gordon Harris voucher.

Matina recommends that you consider this course for the July holidays if you are into art, fashion or being an individual who likes to try new creative activities. While she already had a good knowledge of makeup, this course allowed Matina to experiment with an advanced ‘look’. She recommends the course as an activity that really takes you out of your comfort zone through learning about different types of creative makeup. From her photos you will see she had to design a ‘character’ for herself and apply makeup to accentuate aspects of her appearance. Matina won a Yoobee Colleges Creative Excellence Award for her outstanding WOW look. She received a certificate, letter of commendation and Gordon Harris voucher. An added bonus if you do the course is that you will leave with a Creative Makeup Kit!

STAR Digital Painting Course @ Yoobee College of Creative Innovation

STAR Digital Painting Course @ Yoobee — Image by: HHS

Most of those who take Art at HHS tend to specialise in the physical painting style but after a four day course at Yoobee, Samantha would recommend others try Digital Painting. She enjoyed learning and experimenting with Photoshop as she had not used the software before. The tutor gave them the freedom to create any piece of art and provided guidance and support when they got stuck. As you can see from the photos, Samantha created some great pieces and now has extra skills to use for her NCEA Art Portfolio. Trying new learning environments is a huge advantage in helping to extend your experience and as Samantha discovered, a lot of fun! She also won a Yoobee Colleges Creative Excellence Award as recognition of her top performance in the holiday programme. She received a certificate, letter of commendation and Gordon Harris voucher.

STAR Barista Course @ The Learning Place

A group of Year 13s took time in the April school holidays to learn barista skills that they can use for part-time work in local or CBD cafes/supermarkets. They were able to gain valuable practical experience and NCEA credits - and one even made Ms Pat Agnew a delicious espresso when she visited! A number of the Year 13s stated that it was fun and that they liked that the course had people from other schools. All of them enjoyed making the different types of coffees and using the machines, though they had to learn the procedures and safety hazards first. This course could help you by adding to your skillset for part-time work; look out for other Barista courses in the Daily Notices.
