"Raranga Wānanga "

HHS —

In March a group of seven kōtiro got the opportunity to learn some raranga (Māori weaving with harakeke) with Whaea Giarne over two days.

They wove a putiputi (flower) to practice the weaving skill they would need for a kono or kōnae. A kono is a four corner basket and a kōnae is a small kete with two corners.

"They were an amazing group who managed to make the lily and two examples of the kono or kōnae. Their second pieces all showed a marked development of raranga skills and understanding of the tikanga. The kōtiro were all able to achieve 4 credits in Visual Arts, Cultural competencies. I would like to thank the group for showing strength, perseverance and patience in picking up a new skill in such a short period of time. " Whaea Giarne/Mrs Harrison
