Level Three Geography Camp - an unforgettable camp

Pam Hunt —

To put the experience into only a few words is impossible. From the moment we arrived until our departure a few days later, a very well-equipped camp with lots to do unfolded.

As a part of the Geography group, we were taken out to the stunning Akaroa Bay to record data and investigate the patterns across four different beaches within the bay, all significantly different from one another. We were investigating our own aims in groups, but these mainly focused on how the coastal processes shape the coastal features that exist in Wainui Bay.

We were staying at the wonderful YMCA campsite about 10 minutes walking from the beaches to the west of the bay. Immediately on arrival, you are surrounded by the most spectacular scenery, unique wildlife and most importantly the friendly staff who accommodated our stay - I'd be lying if I told you there was a moment with nothing to do whilst there for three days.

Excluding the expected work and research, I found myself and a couple of others out walking down towards the bay to observe the wildlife with a camera and take photos. We snapped many photos of woodpigeons, pūkeko, fantails, and unintentionally the cows too. Inside the facility, people were grouped up talking by the fireplace, playing games and in some cases pranking one another too.

Thanks to the YMCA facility for hosting us, and well done to those who organised the entire camp as it ran flawlessly.
