Upcoming Opportunities in Outdoor Education at Hillmorton High School

Paul Ferguson —

Outdoor Education students prepare for a range of adventures this Term.

YEAR 11 OUTDOOR EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES

Towards the end of Term 1 and start of Term 2, the Year 11 Outdoor Education students have been preparing for their first overnight Sea Kayak Journey in Week 3.  Key highlights in the lead up have been experiencing their first wet exit and the shock of the chilly Canterbury water. This year we will be staying at Ōtamahua/Quail Island Recreation Reserve then checking out the historic Rippa Island in Whakaraupō (Lyttelton Harbour). This experience helps to connect to some of our local history whilst building on their key kayak skills with many extending these skills in the Abel Tasman or Queen Charlotte Sounds in Year 12.

YEAR 10 OUTDOOR EDUCATION CLASS
After researching and planning their ultimate class adventure within the budget provided, the Year 10 Outdoor Education class (optional subject) are off to Lake Lyndon to build on their recent kayaking, mountain bike and fishing skills. A big thanks to Fish and Game for loaning us fishing rods and setting us up with a youth fishing license. We are really looking forward to the best big fish stories! Watch this space!

YEAR 12 OUTDOOR EDUCATION ADVENUTRE
This term the Year 12 Outdoor Education students look to tread new territory by combining the Mountain Bike and Tramping adventures as we explore further up the Poulter Valley. Big thanks to Christchurch Adventure Park for providing the opportunity to improve our mountain bike skills on their challenging and quality tracks. Key highlights of this trip are building our own panniers and learning the art of minimal packing and taking the essentials in this stunning environment.
