Fertilising for our future

Pam Hunt —

Level One Geography eco waste fertilising for our future field trip with the Christchurch City Council Learning Through Action Programme

The Level One Geography class went to the Eco Depot on Monday June 20 to help with our current topic, Food Waste, that we are learning about as a Contemporary Geographic Issue.

We were taught about what we are allowed to feed worms, how to make EM Bokashi and how to hot compost properly, e.g. how to layer dry food, add water, then green food or plant waste, and microorganisms from soil, and then to cap it off with a heat layer.

We learnt about the best things to put into the green topped bin for kerbside recycling and what things we can use to make our own compost at home, or to just make it better.

I didn't expect for us to actually be able to make EM Bokashi but we did and we got to bring it back to school with us so we can compost food waste at school.

Overall this was an interesting and entertaining experience and really helped to show there is more than one way to make the world a little more green.
