Careers Department - Guiding Career Pathways

HHS —

An update from the Careers Department on what's been happening this month with many students attending different courses!

Having a trial run on an Ara course

Patrick had the opportunity to go to Ara twice a week this term to learn some Work Skills. He learnt to

identify ways of keeping his personal property safe and how to handle potentially hazardous situations. Some of these situations included looking after personal belongings, emergency procedures, health and safety in the community, road rules, busing/bus exchange and where to get help etc. This course will help Patrick to make a successful transition from secondary school to tertiary education as he had to learn the appropriate actions to be taken for each situation. Patrick has enjoyed the discussions and working with other teens from a variety of Christchurch schools. He liked the learning games the best.

All About Ice Cream at Ara - A Delicious Experience

Four ākonga had the opportunity to participate in an Ara Experience where they learnt about kitchen management, health and safety in the workplace and cleaning regulations by making different ice cream dishes. They enjoyed the fast pace of the lessons and the practical elements. The course resulted in a signature dish the group had to create by mixing their flavours and designing a new look for the ice cream. This proved to be one of the best parts of the course as they got to mix their own flavours and add combinations to vanilla-based ice cream. All of the ākonga were able to develop knowledge, have fun and gain some Level Two credits as Year 11s. Below are some photos of their delicious creations!
