Outdoor Education - Tramping

Tracey Johnson —

Level 1 & 2 OE students tramping Te Ara Pātaka walkway on Banks Peninsula

Over the final weeks of term, 26 Level 1 & 2 OED students had 2 or 3 days tramping over the Te Ara Pātaka walkway on Banks Peninsula.

We had fortunate weather windows to allow the classes to get out an explore local tracks and huts (Tūrangawaewae) and giving them the experience and confidence in their outdoor abilities. Students learn valuable lifelong memories and skills such as weather reading, mapping and navigation and how to work together to achieve group goals. Mr Ferguson and Miss Owen are extremely proud of the individual and class accomplishments made throughout the tramping units and want to share their achievements with our Horomaka community!

Level 1 OE students: 2 days, 20 - 27km, 1200m elevation gained, overnight at Rod Donald Hut, summited Mt Herbert

Level 2 OE students: 3 days, 50km, 2500m elevation gained, overnight at Packhorse Hut & Rod Donald Hut, summited Mt Herbert (twice!).

Semester option course Year 10 OE students had a camp at Hibburt Park in Week 8. This is a taster course on offer for students looking to study OE in Years 11 & 12. On this camp students went mountain biking, completed team ABL games, climbed the high ropes and flew on the ziplines at Adrenalin Forest. Awesome to see a passionate outdoorsy group coming through.

Horomaka Outdoor Education would also like to acknowledge Kathmandu for their generosity and support to our fundraising this year, without this support we wouldn't have the equipment and resources to provide these once in a lifetime experiences for our ākonga.
