HHS Football Claim 3rd at Tournament

Geordie Dann —

The Horomaka earned their best result at the Linwood Tournament in Dunedin.

The Hillmorton Football team travelled to Dunedin for the Linwood Football Tournament. There were 20 teams competing from around New Zealand.

The boys started strong and were unbeaten in pool play and managed to qualify first in Pool D because of a superior goal difference over King's College by 2.

Unfortunately we drew defending champions Massey High School from Auckland who finished the tournament with 59 goals for and did not concede a goal. We lost to them which meant we played St Kevin's College from Oamaru for 3rd or 4th place.

It was a roller coaster of a game with goals at both ends, but some late goals from Cameron Rean, Nathan Weakley and Shoei Nakazono ensured a 6-3 win.

At prize giving, the boys were presented medals for third place and Cameron Rean claimed the Golden Boot for the whole tournament as the leading goal scorer with 19 goals in 6 games.

It was a great trip with good lads, great banter and top results. Two Year 9 students Alex Young and Daniel Heyman made their tournament debuts and we only say goodbye to one Year 13 in Nathan Weakley which bodes well for 2020.

Patrick Cameron and Cameron Rean won the coveted 'Players Player' award voted by HHS team mates after each game.

Massey High School beat Trident High School from Whakatane 10-0 in the final.

Thanks to Ms Thomas for organising our trip, Mr Sharr for sourcing us a new white away uniform and the students and staff for their support before and during the Tournament.
