Hillmorton Tigers at Robotics Nationals

Hillmorton High School —

VEX V5 Robotics Nationals come to Christchurch

The weekend of the 19th and 20th of March saw teams from around the country come to Christchurch Boys High School for the annual VEX Robotics Championship. Teams have been working after school and at weekends since May last year to design, build and test their robots to compete in a series of heats. HIllmorton's team was made up of Bethan Edwards, Stephen Hewson and Jerry Tan who each took different roles within the team to complete the build and program the robot.

Each team played 12 heats to gain entry into the quarter finals. Hillmorton were placed fifth at the end of the heats which put them in a great position thrashing their competitors 57 v 0 (60 being maximum points) to get to the semis. Unfortunately that's where their luck ran out and they were beaten by the eventual winners, a combined team from STAC and St Peter's College. The team didn't leave empty handed though, picking up the National 'Best Build' Robot Award for the most reliable and consistent robot. The 2021/22 competitions starts in May.
