Geographers Do Wainui
The Y13s Geographers went on their annual pilgrimage to Wainui in Banks Peninsula to understand the Bay.
Mrs Jordan-McGrath's Y13 Geographers spent a day at the various beaches running experiments to examine the features and processes of Wainui, such as waves, sediment, longshore transportation, human modification and beach slopes.
Then the students went to Akaroa to analyse what locals, businesses, tourists and others think about freedom campers and their impact on society, the economy and the environment.
After that they got to ride the Black Cat Cruise to see the geological history of the harbour by heading out past the heads. The students also got to see Albatross, a Blue Penguin, Hector's Dolphins and NZ Fur Seals.
Students learnt a lot in the 3 day camp, including learning to use equipment hired from UC, what its like to work in groups, collecting data and issues associated with this and how to apply geography to real world situations.
