Year 5-8 students will be participating in swimming lessons, which will be instructed by an external provider - Hilton Brown Swimming - 5 Rawiri Place, Hobsonville.

Each student will participate in 8 lessons from Monday to Thursday (2 weeks); each lesson will be 30 minutes. Students will be ability grouped in structured swimming lessons. The components that will be covered in the programme are:

• Lesson 1: Body position. We will be working on making sure the swimmers are using this lesson to build a base that will assist them as we move through the week.

• Lesson 2: Freestyle kick. We will be working to ensure the swimmers are kicking from their hips, not their knees. This will give them a good amount of power to get through the water.

• Lesson 3: Breathing Position/Doggy paddle.

• Lesson 4: Water Safety – Life Jackets. Fitting life jackets and swimming with them on, practicing huddles, chains, entries, and exits.

• Lesson 5: Back Kick. Here we will be working on having power in the water and practice rolling from their front and back with only kicking.

• Lesson 6: Backstroke. Today we will be incorporating arms and teaching them how to keep themselves up on the water.

• Lesson 7: Recap of the swimming skills we have learnt over the week.

• Lesson 8: Water Safety Obstacle Course - put a life jacket on in the water, pull a friend to safety, climb on and off the mat, swim through waves, jump with a life jacket on and throw out a floating device to another person in the water.

Weeks 5 & 6 - (H1, H2, H3, H4, H5) - 23 August-2 September

Weeks 7 & 8 - (H6) - 6-16 September 

Students will walk to and from Hobsonville School with their classroom teacher. Each student will be given a high vis jacket to wear to and from school.

The cost of the lessons will be $64 - payment can be made via KINDO. This is a pay-to-attend activity, payment in full or a confirmed payment plan is required 5 days prior to your child’s scheduled start date for your child to participate; this payment is non-refundable.
