The Importance of Sleep
Getting enough sleep is super important for kids! It's like charging up a battery for our bodies and brains.
As guardians we play a crucial role in ensuring the healthy development of our tamariki, and one of the most impactful ways to support this is by prioritising their sleep. Adequate sleep is a vital necessity for a child's physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Research consistently highlights the profound importance of sleep for children. Quality sleep is closely linked to cognitive functions, memory consolidation, and learning. When children get the recommended amount of sleep for their age group, typically ranging from 9 to 12 hours for children aged 6 to 12, they show improved attention spans, better academic performance, and enhanced problem-solving skills.
Furthermore, sleep plays a significant role in your child's physical growth and overall health. During deep sleep, the body releases growth hormones that aid in muscle repair, bone development, and immune system reinforcement. As guardians, fostering healthy sleep habits early on not only ensures your child's immediate well-being but also lays the foundation for a healthier future. So, by encouraging a consistent sleep schedule and creating a comfortable sleep environment, you're giving your child the best possible start in life.
How can I foster healthy sleep habits?
Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends, helps the body get into a routine.
Turning off computers, TV screens, video games, and other bright lightsat least 1 hour before it’s time to sleep.
Don't watch scary TV shows or movies close to bedtime because these can sometimes make it hard to fall asleep - especially for children.
Create a calming bedtime routine - warm bath, put on pyjamas, brushing teeth and reading a book or singing a lullaby.
Beds should be used for sleeping - not doing homework, reading, playing games, or talking on the phone. That way, you'll train your body to connect your bed with sleep.
Imagine sleep as a superhero that helps us feel strong, smart, and ready for all the fun adventures!
