Matariki Art

Stacey Osborne - Art Teacher —

Yesterday H13 spent the day creating artworks based on Matariki.

We talked about the 9 stars and what they signified and also the kinds of things we could do to celebrate Matariki next week. We learned that we could spend time with our whānau, enjoy singing and dancing, share kai together and do fun activities like flying manu tukutuku.

The children created a night landscape with the 9 stars, as well as a manu tukutuku or kite, using paint and soft pastels. They enjoyed getting their hands dirty to create the illusion of the southern lights on the horizon.

They then decorated their manu tukutuku with Māori designs like koru; that signifies new beginnings.

Finally they weaved sticks over and under through their kites.

They were all super happy with their final pieces.
