Year 4 Writing - Tiger Striped Marlin

Hobsonville School Office —

This week, Year 4 have been learning about the animals that live in the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park. We were inspired by last week's visit from Riley from the Young Ocean Explorers. We looked closely at a picture of our chosen animal and sketched, in detail, what we saw. We then did factual and descriptive writing about our animal.

The stripes on a tiger striped marlin fade away as it goes deeper and deeper. When it is hunting it moves in a spear motion because it moves very, very fast. The tiger striped marlin was close to extinction but came back quickly in numbers.

A tiger striped marlin is in fact a close relative to sailfish and swordfish. Their big spear like upper bill helps them defend themselves by stabbing predators that are hunting them. These particular marlin love to jump out of the water and splash back down soaking you and your boat if you're in one. The tiger striped marlin is named that because they have beautiful tiger stripes. Their spoiler like tail helps them glide through the water. Their tail helps generate enough down force to glide like a Ferrari!
