Aquabots - International Success!

Brad Hill —

Hobsonville School Team Make an International Splash placing 3rd in the World Aquabots Championship

Congratulations to Aarav, Jamie, Caleb and Alex for more Aquabots success. Last weekend was the online International Seaperch (Aquabots) competition and the results were announced on Sunday. There were international teams from China, all across the USA, and Hobsonville School representing New Zealand. Our Hobsonville team - Aqua Alphas (representing NZ after winning the NZ Nationals last year in Masterton) PLACED 3RD in the Engineering Design Process (EDP). This is an outstanding result, as this is the most coveted compulsory event of the competition, and is the most technical STEM category.

For an international line up, it shows how much work everyone put in last term, and also in the April school holidays. The team had been working every Wednesday in Term 1 this year; focussing on their design and testing the speed and maneuverability on our own course, which is submerged on the floor of our school pool. The team would record their data, analyse, then make changes to their design. They were also inspired by the America's Cup and inquired deeply in the hydrofoiling process. We are very proud of you.

Thank you for support from the Ministry of Inspiration (MOI) and BECA for helping our Aqua Alphas be the best we can be. If international travel opens next year, it will be such a rich learning experience for these students to have another chance to compete in the US next year - Texas is the 2022 proposed venue. Fingers crossed.

Here are some screenshots of their Engineering Design Logbook which placed them 3rd overall in the world for the middle school category.
