Y7/8 NW Tag Tournament

Hobsonville School Office —

Hobsonville School Y7 and 8 students participated in the AAIMS 2020 North West Zone Tag Qualifier Tournament held at the Trusts Arena, Henderson.

Tag rugby is a new sport that is rapidly growing in popularity in Auckland since it was first invented in the 1990s (by a professional rugby league player – Perry Haddock). Tag rugby is a non contact sport based upon the rules of rugby league. The object of tag rugby is to score tries, by running with the ball with the aim of touching it on the ground behind the opponents try line.

One of the most distinctive features of tag rugby is that all players wear special tag rugby belts or tag rugby shorts which have velcro patches, on which two ribbons are attached. In tag rugby, players attempt to remove a ribbon from the player’s belt or shorts in order to advance the game.

In the blistering sun our students made a number of rips, spins, sidesteps and run away ties. After a day of sweat and a few tears, the Hobby girls team crawled away with 4th place and our boys came home 5th.  Mr Brake
