Connectedness

Mary Laing - Y7/8 Teacher H26June 6, 2024

In Week 5, the Y5-8 students and teachers participated in our second round of Connection Activities, part of our inquiry learning focusing on 'Connectedness'.

Our previous session was a hit, so this time the Y 5-8 kaiako mixed up their groupings to design more engaging activities for our ākonga. These activities focused on developing our ākonga's ability to work as a team, cooperate, and connect with people they wouldn't normally interact with. Ms Ambags, Whaea Priya, and Mr Williams led a Rakau session, using small and large rakau sticks to encourage communication and teamwork skills; Miss Aspin and Mr Grace got their boogie on with Just Dance; Ms Maha and Mr Hill ignited a love of science and technology with a round of STEM activities; Miss Laing and Ms Mohan organized a rousing game of musical chairs with a twist; and Mr Brake and Miss Dwyer stimulated creativity with a connection-based artwork for the walls in Red and Blue Room.

This second round of activities was a huge success, with the Y 5-8 ākonga giving positive feedback about the hour. They were able to roam around and join as many activities as they liked, or simply stay at their favorite activity.

Connection is crucial for our ākonga, as it fosters a sense of belonging and supports their social and emotional development across all year levels. By building strong relationships, ākonga learn empathy, cooperation, and effective communication skills that are essential to positive human connection.
