John Parsons - Key Takeaways from Community Meeting

Thank you to all the parents/caregivers who attended the John Parson’s Information Session on Tuesday night.
There were approximately 90 adults in attendance and we were very fortunate to hear so many key messages and strategies to use. We are also planning to book John Parsons for Term 1, 2026.
For those who were not able to attend, please read below for some key takeaway messages, as well as some very useful resources:
Four indicators for parents to assess if screen attachment (technology) is a problem for their child:
1. Sleep (please read article in Principal's message)
2. Movement
3. Diet
4. Learning levels
The legal age for all social media accounts is 13 years of age. John strongly emphasised the brain is not ready to make more sensible decisions until they 14 and older.
Boredom is good for your child - it is the precursor to creativity. Let them solve the boredom themselves.
Think ‘screen attachment’ - not screen time.
We (parents/caregivers) are not their friends, we are their guardians.
Use guardianship language e.g. “I will be taking this device off you, because I love you.”
Please also remember to talk with your child about their 1 hour session with John Parsons on Tuesday. They too learnt some important strategies (e.g. ‘no bedroom, bathroom, pyjamas’, or ‘zip it, lock it, pop it in your pocket’).
After you have read the sleep article and watched the videos hyperlinked below, think of one area to implement at home for the next few weeks. A great place to start could be the dinner table.
