Digital Opportunities for our Students

Melanie Taite-Pitama —

At Haeata we work hard to create extraordinary opportunities for our staff, ākonga and whānau. Check out some of the digital opportunities we have been a part of.

A small group of ākonga attended Waihiko an initiative facilitated by Digital Natives on Saturday May 6 . The kaupapa of the workshop was around digitising Māori stories.

Proudly sponsored by He Kai Kei Aku Ringa,  Digital Native Aotearoa ran this workshop as part of CHCH Techweek. Our ākonga got to see, hear and understand how the collective businesses utilise digital technology to tell traditional stories in a modern way. They interacted with some of the tools and techniques used by professionals which include design, illustration, animation, film, web, mobile and virtual/augmented reality. Haeata staff and ākonga also got to learn about how each organisation started and developed into the largest collective of digital Māori creatives in Aotearoa.

During the same week Crescent Consulting ran some activities around NZ Tech week as part of a national government initiative, locally driven by Canterbury Development Corporation. Haeata ākonga that have a particular interest in  exploring a career in ICT were lucky to have a visit and presentation from two chief executives/owners of companies in highly successful IT careers.

Margaret Pickering, COO and Head Gamer at MTech Games and Stickmen Media

MTech Games uses VR and leading edge technology to create serious games for rehabilitation, training and educational purposes and Margaret  demonstrated the technologies and vision for using their products and the many uses they can have outside pure gaming pleasure.

Kieron Telford, Development Manager MYOB

Kieron spoke from the perspective of a Software Developer who has managed to tune into a variety of industry application areas and how exciting it can be to work in truly Agile teams. He put an end to the myth that Programmers are ‘backroom’ nerds and enlightened us on the activities that are going on in a creative team environment.
