Kei te aha mātou? What are we doing in Riroriro? Years 1-2
Today Whaea Kym and Whaea Nat were with Te Aowhaitini in Riroriro, after morning tea different pangarau/maths stations were set up. Kairo, Sammy-Jo, Aarius, Monaro, Sapphire and Cerenity-Blue all came to the tepu with number lines, whiteboards and markers set up. They were so eager to get started and knew exactly what needed to be done. There were lots of counting, saying numbers, writing numbers and seeing who could count the to the highest number
TMOA Achievement Objectives:
Pāngarau Literacy Students will exchange ideas and communicate using both written and oral language, symbols and other types of pāngarau representations.

Tau 4 (Kuaka)
STEM - The tallest tower.
Mā te kimi ka kite, Mā te kite ka mōhio, Mā te mōhio ka mārama
Seek and discover. Discover and know. Know and become enlightened
Ka taea e matou te hanga?
Today, in Kuaka, we all took part in a challenge to build the tallest tower made from only pipe cleaners. The brief was: The tower could be made with anything else, nothing could be used to weigh it down or help it stand, the tower must stay up all by itself. All 30 pipe cleaners must be used.
Sometimes it was hard when our team mates had different ideas and wanted to try something else but all of us got something created in the end, even if it wasn’t what we had in mind in the beginning! We had lots of fun and there was lots of discussion and giggling as the building took place. When we reflected on what we had done we all agreed team work was the most important thing to start and having a design plan to follow was also a good idea. It was easier when Kym put some pictures up of other peoples to give us some ideas to look at. Well done to the winners who earned themselves a treat for all their mahi! Wheo kē!
Ngā Mātāpono
You all used the Dispositions of Collaborator, by working together, Designer, when you planned your towers out and created them, and Contributor by everyone being involved and offering ideas and sharing reflections about your learning when we had finished. You also showed Resilience by not giving up even when it got hard. WANANEI!

Kua tae tātou ki te wiki tuaono, ka rawe tātou! I ngā wiki kua pahure i mahi kaha mātou o Tōrea i ngā mahi maha o te ao mātauranga. We have made it to wiki 6 of term 1! Over the past few weeks Kōrtare & Tōrea have been working hard in all areas of learning.
Ipu Kōrero
The reo ā-waha programme introduced earlier this term is an oral language programme for Māori-medium classrooms. Te Ipu Kōrero is designed to lift the achievement of ākonga by improving their oral language. We have been working hard over the last three weeks implementing te reo tohutohu - instructional teaching and learning. We have been amazed at the success we have achieved with our tamariki so far and look forward to more success at the end of the term. Koia kei a koutou tamariki mā!!
Banqer
Our Banqer initiative has been a hit with many of our tamariki working hard to complete their weekly jobs to earn banqer dollars. This week our tamariki had an opportunity to spend some of their cash to participate in the mid term auction. The overall average for savings in Banqer is $5K, ka rawe tamariki mā!
Te Reo Pākeha
We are refreshing and strengthening our knowledge around parts of speech. We have also been introduced to a new writing framework called ‘The Story Mountain’. This planning framework uses short films to help us learn different parts of the story writing process. It has been awesome observing our tamariki during the learning and the confidence to share back their knowledge with others in class.
Ko te ahurei o te tamaiti arahia ā tātou mahi
Kātahi rā te tamaiti māia ko tēnei!
Kōmanawa’s very own Nixie Te Koha (NgāPuhi, Kāti Wheke) performed in front of a live SOLD OUT audience during the weekend to showcase her brilliant skills in mahi whakaari (acting). A Baby called Sovereignty took the audience on a journey with local wāhine Māori through impressive indigenous sound, movement, text and visual arts led by the amazing Juanita Hepi. Nā reira e Nixie nei a mātou tō whānau o Kōmanawa e pīki mihi atu ana ki a koe oti rā ki te hunga i kaha nei ki te poipoia kōrua ko ōu pukenga whakaari. Haramai tētahi āhua!
