Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori

Kym Thompson and Kylah Madden —

Māori Language Week

Last week was Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori - Māori Language Week and in Kaunuku we did lots of different things. Kym shared a Māori word or two a day (Kupu o te Rā), like the word for selfie- kiriahua, for the competition and if you got it right you could win a prize on Friday.

At morning tea each day in the library there was colouring in, storytelling and cartoons in Te Reo Māori. Māori games like Ki-o-rahi and Tī uru were been played at lunchtimes, too. Whaea Juanita and Whaea Arihia painted moko kauae at lunchtime on Rāapa.

Kym did some printmaking. She was going to encourage ākonga to look at koru and use them in their prints. Beth looked up some māori designs for kids to sketch. They could also sketch the Tuna, Pātiki and Inaka wall signs.

Gen showed a virtual walkthrough of a Pā site then talked about the different parts. Dre and Jayia then made an awesome Pā out of popsicle sticks. It included a pātaka and wharenui. Others have made wharenui or some models of Pā fortifications.

The best part of Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori was the finale. Rodney, Carla, Kaelyn, Pete, some Kōmanawa adults and a whole lot of ākonga got together in the kitchen and worked hard to make big pots of boil up and fried bread for the kura to have for lunch. The queues were out the door and everyone agreed it was awesome kai.

Ka mau te wehi te Wiki o Te Reo Māori!
