Board Update

Cheryl Doig —

The board met on Monday and is excited to share some of the next steps of development with you, and to ask your support. Here are some of our new initiatives.

Board Advisory Group

The Establishment Board will be in place until next year, but it is time to start designing next steps together and to consider the format and design of governance at Haeata. The board is interested in getting feedback from the Māori community and mana whenua and to this end we encourage whānau to show their interest in being part of the Board Advisory Group. We welcome one and all to be part of this conversation. Perhaps you are interested in sharing your ideas about timelines and structure of the new board, perhaps you want to find out what being on a board is all about, or maybe you want to see all the work that goes on behind the scenes. Note that this does not mean you have to stand for board elections but that you are interested in supporting the design of the process for governance and board structure. We hope to have a team of 6-10 people who can commit to meeting 2-3 times over the course of the year.If you are interested please fill in the form at http://bit.ly/haeataadvisoryOnce we have a list of interested people we will contact you to explore a possible time that is suitable for the Board Advisory Group to meet.

Legacy Project

We are also starting to work on a legacy project as a combined celebration of the four local closing schools. This project is being coordinated by Robyn Nuthall and Marie Burke. Parents/ interested in finding out more should email botadmin@haeata.school.nz or let Andy know.Other board notesThe board keeps up to date with what is happening in the school in learning, behaviour, health and safety, and employment. We have needed to suspend students from time to time, and expect that students and whānau will behave with respect. If you do have concerns please follow the protocols outlined in the schools Complaints Policies, which you will find on our website www.haeata.school.nz

On Thursday Haeata hosted over 50 secondary teachers who were interested in the learning here. They visited Kōrepo and Ihutai hapori, talking to students from Y7-13, observing exhibitions of learning, and checking out the learning spaces. One of the principals contacted me afterwards to say how much they enjoyed the visit, and made the following observation:

"We saw happy engaged kids who were articulating their learning really well and were proud of their school. The same with staff we talked to."
