Linwood Community Arts Centre asking for Submissions for Te Whare Maire O Nga Punawerewere Young Contemporary Maori Art Award

Monique Lee —

Please see submission requirements below, due on 6th and 7th June, open to both children and adults.

Te Whare Maire O Nga Punawerewere, will be a selection of Toi Mahi from various artists, namely you, that are trapped and entangled in a metaphoric spider’s web in the annual gallery exhibition. We will be endeavouring to showcase works from Toi makers of Māori descent.

Part of the ethos of this exhibit will be to explore ideas around the future of Māori art

So the key question is, what does that mean for you? Will your work be based on revitalising factions pertaining to Māoritanga? Or will you will be generating work that speaks of notions shrouded around identity? Or  will you be exploring pictographic narrative-based imagery of hybridity, being of two worlds. Or something else. So what I am trying to say is, the theme is very vague, but open to interpretation. As long as you can conjure ideas that embody the future, our future of making art in Otautahi.

This exhibition is open to all Maori artists, any age, from emerging to established. This is a gallery sponsored exhibit, there is no cost associated in entering work. We from the gallery envision that the work will be broached from two different avenues, either from a contemplative or traditional stance.

There is a new Award being offered, offered to rangatahi aged up to 18 years: ‘Te Whare Maire O Nga Punawerewere young contemporary Maori art award’, valued at $200.
