South West Zone Winter Tournament
We were lucky to head off to the South West Zone Winter Tournament on Tuesday. Because our zone is smaller than Friday sport this was allowed to go ahead with no spectators. Not all schools in our zone were able to take part this year, so less games were played than usual. Our teams were very excited on the bus and the new bus driver got to hear our school chants very loudly. Our 4 teams played well and came away with some great results.
Our Netball Red team dominated the zone competition. With two of the team injured prior to tournament the sub bench was light and the girls dug deep. Their passing and shooting was strong and they won 5 out of 5 games taking the overall win on the day. Congratulations Netball Red. Big thank you to Suzie Sauer and Anna Niles for coaching and managing the team on the day for us, as Jess the coach was away sick.
Our Football Red team played 4 fast action games at tournament, with some very tight scores. As games are only 10mins, corner kicks are not taken but are recorded for tight scoring games. The children played well and worked together as a team. They ended up tied with Aidanfield on count back corners to finish 3rd equal. Ka pai. Thank you to Graham O'Neill for reffing the football games at tournament.
Our Hockey Red team had 3 tough games at tournament with a win, a loss and a draw. Results were very mixed between the schools and all points came down to the final game. Our team played well, running the ball wide up the wing and looking for quality passes. The team finished 3rd place for the day - nice work Hockey Red.
Our Taniwha rugby team had the very crucial draw at tournament with only 1 game and 1 school to beat for the honours. Mr Drummond had the team firing and they came out on full cylinders winning 21-0 with the opposition not being able to get past them. Congratulations Taniwha on a solid performance for 1st.
Well done to our 2020 South West Zone Squad pictured above, they can be very proud of the sportsmanship they displayed and the results achieved.
Netball Red and our Taniwha rugby team will now go on to compete at the Central Winter Tournament (in Spring) and represent our school plus the South West Zone at South Hagley on the 18 September. We hope spectators will be able to attend the event. Information will come home at the beginning of September regarding the tournament.
Central Cross Country - New date
The Central Cross Country was due to take place on 12 August, this has been delayed while the country is in AL2. There is now a new date scheduled for 2nd September (pp 9 September) for the event to take place if we are in level 1. We hope for spring like conditions out at the Halswell Quarry in September and the children now have some extra time to train. We wish the following children a great run at Centrals; Naomi T, Harry D, Liam V, Lily F, Neve S, Eli P, Lachie N and Max P. Good Luck
Basketball
Our basketball teams are almost mid-way through their basketball season. We would like to give a big shout out to Nick and the Pioneer Basketball Club for keeping the season running under AL2 conditions. Even though no spectators are allowed in at AL2, our teams are playing some quality games on the courts. Children are learning that being in a team takes commitment, teamwork, sportsmanship, respect, dedication and training. All great skills to learn for life. Thanks to our coaches for their wonderful training sessions and organisation of children before and after games at venues.
Hagley Friday Sport
Due to the high volume of teams that compete at Hagley on a Friday this is difficult to continue while we are in AL2 (to keep under the 100 gathering limit). We hope to be able to play our final game of the season next week - Friday 28 August.
We are grateful our teams have managed to play 3 games during a very unusual short winter season. I know the children have enjoyed the games and are learning more skills each week. We thank our coaches who have been taking great training sessions with our teams. Part of the fun of going to sport is the bus trip to Hagley. I hope your child has shared their team chant with you. These can be heard very loudly each week on a Friday. While our teams not heading to sport our extra options back at school are not happening on a Friday.
Alert Level 2
Thank you for your support while we manage events and adhere to AL2 conditions. It has been a huge juggling act with sport this year. We understand it is hard not to be able to come and watch your children participate, but it is great some of the sports are still managing to take place for the children without spectators. We hope the country and our city moves back to level 1 quickly.
