Maths Week - Rāhina (Monday)
Kia ora whānau
This week (9 - 13 August) is Maths Week. This is a great chance to have fun with your child and do some maths together. This can be as simple as playing board games, draughts (or checkers), chess, card games or baking together.
As part of Maths Week we are suggesting that you and your children try looking at the environment through ‘maths eyes’, ask questions and have discussions. Each day, we are going to send out a photo of something you might see, and some noticing and wondering questions to help.
Monday 9 August
Here’s today’s (Rāhina) picture to talk about and some questions you might like to ask:
- What are noticing about the photo?
- What are they wondering about the picture?
- What questions have you got about the picture?
- What maths questions could you ask?
- Can you find the answer to these questions together?
-
You might talk about shapes, quantities, size, lines, weight, number, colour, proportion, percentage, etc.
Another fun part of maths is to try and solve a problem together with your child. Each day we will send you a couple of problems to choose from to work alongside your child to solve. You might use objects and things to represent part of the problem, or you might draw pictures or diagrams to help you talk about and solve the problem together.
