Central Athletics
Our children had a wonderful day at Ngā Puna Wai, for the Central Athletic Primary School Championships on 4 December. There were 1700 athletes competing on the day and our children did us proud. Many set personal bests either on the track or with field events. Our school dominated with many top 10 places in the throwing events this year. Big congratulations to Calaiss H for winning the Year 5 girls shot put on the day - a huge achievement. Also exciting to see Poppy Y and Brianna S both picking up 3rd place in Yr 5 and Yr 6 girls discus. Well done to all our athletes giving it their best on the day; Harry D, Cael D, Brianna S, Mackenzie G, Calaiss H, Eadie P, Poppy Y, Charlotte W, Maddi C, Chucky T, Kenny L and Henry F.
Touch Rugby
Our touch season has now come to an end. We had 9 teams playing in the Touch Rugby competition at Centennial Park on Thursday evenings this term. Children had a lot of fun, and their skill level could be seen improving each week. Three of our teams qualified for the grand finals, on the last night of competition. Well done to Rockets, Magic and Thunder who all finished "runners up" for the season. Big thank-you to all the awesome people who gave their time and coached a touch team for us this season. It is fantastic to be able to have so many teams participating. See our teams in the gallery below.
Cricket
Congratulations to our Cricket Red team. This team played in the Primary Schools Cricket Finals at Hagley Park on Friday 6 December. The team had 2 strong wins and 1 loss, which saw them finish in 5th place for the day - Ka pai team. Their bowling was on fire and so was their sportsmanship. Many schools commented to our coach how nice it is to play Hoon Hay, Te Kura Kōaka - well done children showing our awesome school way.
Coaches
We would like to give a big shout out to all the wonderful coaches who have helped out with one of our many school teams throughout 2019. Without these wonderful people stepping up to help we can not enter all the teams in the various competitions that we do. The children and our school really thank you for giving children the opportunities to participate in sport.
As we begin to plan for next year, I am keen to hear from YOU if you could help coach a team for us in 2020. Do you have a little sporting knowledge but more importantly; time, passion and enthusiasm to work with our teams. Please email me at michelle.m@hoonhay.school.nz
We're looking for coaches for; Miniball (term1), Basketball, Netball, Football, Hockey (term 2 and 3) ...it is fun and so very rewarding coaching children.
SuperSmash Reading Challenge
Combining reading and sport sounds like a great idea to us...........
Read NZ Te Poru Muramura and NZ Cricket have teamed up this summer to encourage reading over the school holidays. Studies show primary-aged children can lose more than 6 months worth of academic progress over the summer break. Commonly known as the "summer slide." Reading for enjoyment is a great way to keep young minds active over the holidays. See the flyer below, to sign your child up for the free Summer Smash Reading challenge. Keep them reading over the holidays and maybe win some awesome daily prizes as well.
Check it out - reading-challenge.org.nz
**Legends Swimming sports for Yr 5/6 will be held early during Term 1, so keep your child swimming over the summer holidays.
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas. Keep children active over summer, with a sporting item under the Christmas Tree.
