WeetBix TRY
Children pictured above took part in the Weet-bix TRY last weekend. They showed manawanui to complete the course and were excited to show us their medals.
Children either ran, biked or swam as a team, or did the whole event individual, what awesome athletes. Real "GOLD" medal, it passed the bite test :)
Koroī Swimming Sports
A fun, nervous and noisy morning was held at Wharenui Pool on Thursday. It was awesome to see children swimming their best and all children at the pool giving it a go. Swimming is not every child's favourite event, but it is such an important skill to learn and have for life.
For most children this was their first taste at a competitive swimming event. We had children swimming in a variety of strokes in 17m, 25m, and 50m events. Mrs Meaclem was so proud to see children trying something outside of their comfort zone, while others were very focused and going for gold. It was also warm fuzzies to hear the children cheering and encouraging each other on.
It was a busy morning with 120 children splashing around. Big shout out to the wonderful parent helpers and teachers that helped the event to run so smoothly.
Congratulations children, you can all be very proud of your achievements in the pool and pushing your water confidence to new levels, next year you may even choose to race up a longer distance.
All children were swimming for points to earn the infamous "Golden Jandal". The tally has come in and this year Koroī 5 took 1st in both the relay and overall win - Congratulations Koroī 5......but how long will they keep it, before the next class challenge? Check out some pictures below in the gallery from the pool.

Winter Sport Trials
These are happening next week for our Year 5/6 children, it is very early to be thinking about winter sport, however, children are heading away on camps for the following weeks, so the term will disappear very quickly.
Children must attend trials (unless sick) to be considered for a team. We hope to confirm all teams by the end of term 1.
Trial Dates as follows:
Monday 6th March 8am - Netball
Tuesday 7th March 8am - Hockey
Wednesday 8th March 8am - Football
Thursday 9th March 8am - Rugby
Friday 10th March 8am - Basketball
We are limited with the teams we can enter into winter sport, so unfortunately not every child can make a school team. If your child is super keen to play sport this winter, we suggest signing them up with a club for weekend sport as well. There are many sport clubs in our area who can cater for more teams and more children.
Winter Coaches/Managers
In term 2 our winter sport teams begin for our Koroī team. We are currently looking for coaches/managers so we can enter teams in the competitions.
On Friday's we head to Hagley Park at 12.30pm for the afternoon for rugby, football, hockey and netball. On a Wednesday night we play basketball at Pioneer.
If you have time and passion and can help us with any of the the above sports, please make contact with me asap so we can discuss further. You don't need to be an expert in the sport, although a little knowledge is helpful. Please email - michelle.m@hoonhay.school.nz
Cricket Skills and Cricket Bats
Our Mata Whanunga team had a visit from Lucy, of Canterbury Cricket into see them this week.
Canterbury Cricket and Halswell New World donated some new cricket equipment to our school just before Christmas last year, which was very cool. So they thought they would come in and show our year 2's how to hold a bat and catch a ball.
Big thank you to Canterbury Cricket and Halswell New World. We love the new gear and the children enjoy using it.
Kāmata and Mata Whanaunga Athletics Day
Save the date to come and watch our juniors athletes take part in their athletic fun, Tuesday 14 March (pp Wednesday 15th) in the morning.
There will be all sorts of athletic activities happening, along with some running races down the sprint track. Be sure to come down and support children if you can, they love to show you what they can do.
Please make sure children wear shoes that are appropriate to run in. You are welcome to join your child for morning tea :)
