Mihi Whakatau - 9.00am, Friday 01 March
❗PLEASE NOTE: Change of Start time - now 9.00am
We would like to invite all of our school community to come along and help us welcome our new learners, their whānau and our new staff into the Hoon Hay Te Kura Kōaka Community, on Friday 01 March 2024 October from 9.00am.
What is a mihi whakatau?
A mihi whakatau is a less formal form of a Māori pōwhiri, which is the traditional welcome.
It is like a pōwhiri, in that it is a form of welcome to our new pupils, their whānau and new teachers. The Tangata Whenua (the people of the land/or in our case the people of Hoon Hay Te Kura Kōaka) welcome the Manuhiri (new people) onto their land (school) and is a way of welcoming and accepting all new people. Mihi means “to greet” and Whakatau means “to settle”.
This will be a lovely way to welcome everyone new.
If your child is new to our school, you would have received an invitation via email today 😀
We look forward to seeing you there.
Ngā mihi nui
Lee McArthur
Principal
