Athletic Days

On Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th November our Koru, Harakeke and Minnows teams held their athletic days.  The sun shone and there was lots of fun had by all.  It was wonderful to see so many whānua watching and supporting the children.  Children took part in many various activities throughout the morning, including long jump, high jump, obstacle courses, discus, javelin, shot put and finishing with running races down the sprint track - man those little feet can run fast!

See some pictures in the gallery below.  Ka Pai children for giving it a go. Love the smiles and seeing you giving it your best.

Cricket

Our cricket team has now played all 3 of their games and worked well together as a team this season.  The team has now qualified for Finals Festival Day at Hagley Park on Friday 6 December.  Congratulations team and coach, Mrs Olesen.  Best of luck at finals day - smash it out of the park for 6!

Central Athletics

The Central Athletic Championships will be held at Ngā Puna Wai on Wednesday 4 December.  We wish the following children the best of luck for the day;  Harry D, Cael D, Brianna S, Mackenzie G, Calaiss H, Eadie P, Poppy Y, Charlotte W,  Maddi  C, Chucky T, Kenny L and Henry F.    The children will be competing against children from all around Canterbury, and the wider Canterbury regions along with children from the West Coast.  Well done children making it to this level of competition.  Have a great day. You now get to put all your practice into action - Focus and Good Luck!

Coaches

We would like to give a big shout out to all the wonderful coaches who have helped out with our many school teams throughout 2019. Without these wonderful people stepping up to help we can not enter all the teams in the various competitions that we do.  The children and  our school really thank you for giving children the opportunities to participate in sport.

As we begin to plan for next year,  I am keen to hear from YOU if you could help coach a team for us in 2020.  Do you have a little sporting knowledge but more importantly, time, passion and enthusiasm to work with our teams.  Please email me at michelle.m@hoonhay.school.nz.  We're looking for coaches for Miniball, Basketball, Netball, Football, Hockey .............it is fun and so very rewarding coaching children.

Muddy Good House Fun Run -  Whole School

On Thursday 12 December we will be holding a Muddy Good House Fun Run here at school for the afternoon.  All children will be participating and it will be lots of wet, muddy fun.  Children will be eating their lunch in house groups (a little earlier than usual), and then they will get changed into togs and house colour t-shirt for the afternoon.  Big buddies will be helping little buddies around the course.   Parents are welcome to come and watch, or join in the fun with their children - 1.30pm-3pm.   A super fun school event to finish of the 2019 year.

Super Smash Reading Challenge

Combining reading and sport sounds like a great idea to us...........

Read NZ Te Poru Muramura and NZ Cricket have teamed up this summer to encourage reading over the school holidays.  Studies show primary-aged children can lose more than 6 months worth of academic progress over the summer break.  Commonly known as the "summer slide." Reading for enjoyment is a great way to keep young minds active over the holidays.  See the flyer below, to sign your child up for the free Summer Smash Reading challenge.  Keep them reading over the holidays and maybe win some awesome daily prizes as well.
