South West Zones Swimming Sports

The South West Zone Swimming was sleek and fast in Jellie Park Pool on Friday.  We had 9 children (pictured above) representing our school in Freestyle, Backstroke and Breaststroke. Our children swam very well, even more so considering 4 of them had just returned tired from school camp!

Lily F, Dante M, Mikeila H & Lachie N were first up in the pool, with the 4 x 50m freestyle relay.  The competition was strong but we didn't let that stop us, and never gave up.  The finish line was very close and we took the 1st place honours. Way to go Hoon Hay Te Kura Kōaka.  We would like to thank Mikeila who is only Year 5, stepping up into the Yr 6 relay at short notice today.

Sienna T, Emma B, Lachie N and Austin O were all strong with their backstroke, making it through their heats and into the semi-finals and then the final.

Dante M, Lachie N, Lily F and Mikeila H dominated in their freestyle heats making some great placings for the day.

The last event in the pool for the morning was Fynn, Lily & Emma in the breaststroke events, and they all left their competition behind with their beautiful techniques.

It was great to see our children competing at the zone level and performing so well.  They had to swim heats, semi-finals and finals, which means a lot of swimming. Children have been putting in the after school practise and can be very proud of their results in the pool.

We collected a lot of top spots today in finals:

Relay - Yr 6 Mixed - 1st - Lily, Mikeila, Dante, Lachie

Lachie - Yr 6 Boys - 2nd Freestyle and 2nd Backstroke

Lily - Yr 6 Girls - 1st Breaststroke and 2nd Freestyle

Fynn C - Yr 6 Boys - 2nd Breaststroke

Mikeilia H - Yr 5 Girls - 1st Freestyle

Austin O - Yr 6 Boys - 4th Backstroke

Sienna T - Yr 6 Girls - 4th Backstroke

Dante & Emma both made the finals in their events today and just missed out on the top spots.

Fantastic results for Hoon Hay Te Kura Kōaka - we are very proud of you all.

The following  children will now go on to swim at the Central Swimming Competition in April, representing our South West Zone - Lachie, Lily, Fynn, Mikeila and Dante.

We apologise that parents were not allowed in to spectate today, this was a late decision made by Jellie Park Pool staff at 9.15am this morning.  We thank parents for transporting the children to the pool and to Kara Cassie for organising our team poolside.

Miniball

Our Year 4 miniball teams have been having a blast at Pioneer Stadium this term.  They have learnt lots and are improving each week and winning results are beginning to come their way.  Well done to our 3 teams learning new skills, and to our awesome coaches for teaching them the game. See some training photos below.

Please note, there are no games on the 24 March as the stadium is unavailable.  Last games of the season will be played on Wednesday 31 March.  Good luck teams!  Pop down to Pioneer to support our teams, watch some action and do some cheering.

Football Skills

We had Liam Mulcahy and Stuart Kelly, 2 coaches from Halswell United come in and work with some of our classes in our Mata Whanaunga and Kāmata teams.  Children were taken through some football drills, check out some pictures below in the gallery.  If your child is keen to play football this season see the flyer below for the Halswell Club.

Team New Zealand - America's Cup

Big shout out to our Kiwi sailors who sailed away with the "Old Mug" in Auckland this week.   Well Done Emirates Team NZ, exciting to watch the racing action on Te Rehutai unfold on the water.  A good lesson for all athletes - "Never Give Up"
