Kāmata and Mata Whanaunga Athletics

Sunshine, smiles and spectators make for a great junior athletic morning.  Lots of fun was had by all; jumping, running, throwing, and bouncing.

Children tried their best at a variety of events and were keen to show whānau how well they could do.  Even our brand new entrant children to school were giving it all a try - Ka pai.  See the gallery below for some action shots.

South West Zone Swimming Sports

A competitive morning was had by our children at the Selwyn Aquatic centre on Friday.  We had 13 children pictured above representing our school at the South West Zone Swimming Sports.  Our children were competing in 50m events in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and relays.

Our children were nervous, but represented our school with pride and swam some fast competitive times in the pool.  Children were on fire and 11 out of our squad of 13 children made it through their heats and into semi-finals and finals - Ka Pai Hoon Hay Te Kura Kōaka.  Mrs Meaclem was very excited to see you at the recording table with your placing numbers in each event, and watch you swim your finals.

The Zones is very competitive and children can be very proud of their results achieved in the pool today.  Thank you to Jamie Lee and Steve for organising our children at the pool today, along with our other parents who were supporting on the sidelines.

Our relay team of Corbin, Macy, Thomas and Lucia picked up 2nd in the pool, and they looked great with their blue HHS caps flying through the water.

The following children took out top podium spots in their year groups today and have now qualified for Central Swimming.

Corbin E - Yr 5 Boys - 3rd Freestyle, 2nd Backstroke

Thomas MS - Yr 6 Boys - 3rd Freestyle, 2nd Backstroke

Lucia M - Yr 6 Girls - 3rd Freestyle, 2nd Backstroke

James C - Yr 6 Boys - 2nd Breaststroke

Mizuki F - Yr 6 Girl - 4th Breaststroke (Reserve)

Congratulations children, a huge amount of fast swimming today to achieve those results, thinking ice-cream for dessert tonight :)

Miniball

Our Year 4 miniball season has now finished for term 1.  Children have played 6 games and their skill level has been improving each week of the season.

The children have learnt heaps and now realise team work and passing makes the teams successful.  Ka pai children, your coaches are impressed with how much fun you have had each week and have enjoyed watching you grow as players.

Big thank you to Sunia Halaifonua, Hamish Smith, Tess Haig and Breigh Monaghan for taking our teams this term.  Great coaches doing it for our children.

Miniball uniforms (washed and clean) are to be returned to Mrs Meaclem on Monday 20 March, many thanks.

Winter Sport Trials

These got underway last week and will continue later in the term after camps return.  Thank you to those children who turned up early to trial.

Not every child who trials can make a team, please remember there are many sports clubs in our area where you can join your child up for the winter sport season.

If your child is away sick on trial day, these children will be seen during a lunch break once they are back at school.  We hope to be able to fit in all our trials before the end of term.  No teams will be announced until ALL trials are completed for every child who wished to trial.

Winter Coaches/Managers

Help - Football coach needed please - Can you help?

In term 2 our winter sport teams begin for our Koroī team. We are currently looking for coach/manager so we can enter teams in the competitions.

On Friday's we head to Hagley Park at 12.30pm for the afternoon for rugby, football, hockey and netball. On a Wednesday night we play basketball at Pioneer.

If you have time and passion and can help us with any of the the above sports, please make contact with me asap so we can discuss further. You don't need to be an expert in the sport, although a little knowledge is helpful. Please email - michelle.m@hoonhay.school.nz

Skill to share.....

Do you have a passion or skill you would be willing to share with our tamariki ?  Perhaps...sewing, baking, crafts, dancing, soap carving, science, woodwork, karate......

When our Year 5/6 sports teams are away at sport on a Friday during terms 2 and 3 we look to offer a variety of activities back at school for Y5/6 children who are not going off to sport.

You would be needed for a 4-6 week block 1.35pm-3pm, to work with a small group of children.  If you have time and an exciting opportunity to offer our children to try something different, please make contact with Michelle Meaclem or Lynda Peterson.
