South West Zone Basketball Tournament

Congratulations to our two teams pictured above; Aces and Stars with coaches Matt Stoltz and Andrea O'Neill These teams represented our school with pride and sportsmanship at the South West Zone tournament on Tuesday.

The tournament was held at Pioneer and the children played fast games sinking hoops and taking wins. The teamwork on court was superb, along with the defence and listening to the coaches.

The Stars played a round robin of 6 games, taking 5 wins and 1 draw. This placed them in 2nd= overall, tied with our neighbours OLA, however, they were pushed to 3rd on count back of hoops sunk for the day. The team really stepped up and played well - Ka pai Girls!

The Aces played 5 games in their pool, with 4 wins and 1 draw placing them first in their pool. They then played Oaklands in the semi-final and lost. However, they left all the excitement to the last few minutes with the final play off for 3rd/4th coming down to a "Golden Goal" moment. The golden hoop was sunk by Cohen and placed them 3rd overall. Well done Aces!

While neither team qualified for the Central basketball tournament, the children played some great basketball and it was good to watch. Well done and thank you coaches.

Thanks also to the many supporters on the sidelines for encouragement and also helping with transport on the day, much appreciated.

Central Primary Schools Cross Country

It rained hard on Tuesday night and we awoke to soggy, muddy conditions for the Central Cross Country this year. We had 9 runners qualify, sadly 2 were sick on the day and could not compete. However, the 7 remaining competitors gave it all they had.

There was no chance of keeping feet dry as they were wet up to the ankles just on the approach to the starting line. However, they had double bowed shoes, great attitude, and determination to negotiate the puddles and mud over the 2km distance.

The children all ran well, their training paid off, however, it was a hard, tough slog in the slippery conditions and they just kept going. Congratulations to Georgia S, Isobel R, Emily H, Isla S, Charlotte B, Grayden W and Roscoe C for completing the course with manawanui, they can be super stoked on their individual times around a very challenging course. Ka pai children :)

Basketball

Our 4 basketball teams are now mid-way through their season.

The teams are learning lots and have had a mixture of results to date. There are no games for any teams next week. Games begin again after the holidays on week 1 of term 3. Teams will still train next week, as there are always things to tweak and work on at practice to improve our skills and teamwork.

A big thank you to our coaches who give their personal time to these out of school sporting activities so your child may play sport.

Friday Hagley Sport

There will still be Hagley Sport on next Friday, 5th July, the last day of term. We hope for all our players to be at school for their teammates - please let the holidays begin on Saturday.

Children have had 4 weeks of competitive sport at Hagley. School sport is a different level from club sport. At school children are getting a taste of competitive sport, while learning how to play fairly in a team environment, using team work and listening skills. It is a time for developing and fostering leadership skills within the group while making sure all players are treated kindly and equally.

Our most important value in our teams is sportsmanship. Sportsmanship is always encouraged and expected to be shown from all our players in any teams, towards their team mates, opposition, coaches or referees. Our children are very good at demonstrating sportsmanship 99% of the time and it is a crucial component of every child's development as they grow on the sports fields.

The team chants on the bus are getting louder and children are loving the chance to get to play against other schools. We thank our coaches for taking our teams each week for training and games.

Training and games continue in term 3, from week 1. We hope you have had a chance to get down to the Hagley sidelines and support our teams, or might be able to next term. Roll on the sunny Fridays.

Canterbury Rams

We are very fortunate to have some Canterbury Rams players working in our school for a few days this term. They have been teaching our tamariki some basketball skills and their knowledge of the game.

The children have been amazed at how tall the players look compared to Mrs Meaclem :)

We appreciate these players giving their time to our school. So far to visit us, we have had Max Darling, MJ Walker, KJ Buffin andTaki Fahrensen all current players in the Rams 2024 Squad.

We also had Reuben Booth in. Reuben is an ex Hoon Hay pupil, who trains with the Rams (currently injured)and he is heading over to Arizona on a basketball scholarship later this season. Reuben was a player in our school basketball teams, it is great to see him following his passion. He has got slightly taller than when he was last here. See some pictures in the gallery below.

Go the Rams! Be sure to get yourself to a Rams Game this season. Free children's ticket available on the link below for an upcoming game in the July school holidays.
