Building to begin next month on new world-class crematorium.

Hope and Sons —

The Dukes Road Crematorium is planned to open in October 2015.

Hope and Sons are current working closely with the DCC Building Consents team to finalise a further Building Consent on its Dukes Road North Site. After filing the application in December good progress has been made with Fire Engineering Reports and Compliance schedules being confirmed this month. Michael Hope explained “We are working closely with our builders and the DCC Consents team to ensure a quality and safe complex”.

1. Hope and Sons firstly applied for an Air Discharge Permit from their Andersons Bay Road site in 2009 which was unsuccessful.

2. Secondly they were approached by the DCC to consider purchasing the Dunedin Crematorium and were eventually told by Council that the Dunedin Crematorium was not for sale on 14 May 2012 after 15 months of negotiations.

3. Hope and Sons subsequently located the Dukes Road location, which complies with the DCC’s Land Use and District Plan, and was given an Air Discharge Permit in 2013 by the ORC that will last for 35 years.

The Dukes Road Crematorium is owned and operated by the Hope family. Michael Hope, managing funeral director of Hope and Sons said “We envisage being the main provider of cremation services in Dunedin, Mosgiel, and the region within the next 3 years.” The Dukes Road Crematorium will be able to provide enhanced cremation services to all funeral directors and families in and around our region.

The Hope Family have been in the funeral profession since 1887, “We are here for the long-haul; we think in an efficient business-like manner and will ensure longevity, consistency, profitability and sustainability, and reinvestment”.

We expect about a six month build before we become operational. There is no provision for a large Chapel on-site but the facility will have privacy and parking, with landscaped surrounding and views to Mt Allan and Saddle Hill. A tranquil setting.
