Year 11 PE: Specialist Sports Opportunities

Horizon Sport —

From Tennis at Mahurangi East to their first Fencing Lesson, Horizon students have had unique opportunities to learn new skills from expert coaches.

In recent weeks, our Year 11 PE students have had the incredible opportunity to participate in a variety of unique sporting experiences, expanding their skills and knowledge in niche sports that are not usually available to them.

Tennis Coaching at Mahurangi East Tennis Club
Earlier in the term, the students were invited to Mahurangi East Tennis Club for a coaching session with tennis expert Hugo Santos. The session provided them with professional guidance, and the students had a great time improving their tennis skills under the watchful eye of an experienced coach. This opportunity was a fantastic way for students to learn the ins and outs of tennis, and everyone left with a new appreciation for the sport!

Introduction to Fencing with Tim Roslin
Students took part in their very first fencing session with Tim Roslin from SPORTextra. They were introduced to this exciting and skillful sport, learning the basics of fencing, from handling the foil to understanding key techniques. It was a fun and educational experience for all involved.

Paddling the Puhoi River
More recently, as part of their ‘Sports Participation’ module, the students took to the water for a kayaking adventure down the Puhoi River. Under the expert guidance of the Puhoi River Kayaks team, the class set off from the scenic heritage village of Puhoi and paddled downstream, taking in the breathtaking natural beauty of the area. With the support of Mr. Alldridge and parent helper Daniel Castro, the students enjoyed a day of exploration and fun on the water, making it a memorable outing for all.

These experiences have provided our Year 11 PE students with valuable exposure to new sports and activities, fostering a love for physical activity in unique and engaging environments. We look forward to many more opportunities like these in the future!
