Year 7-9 Tīeke Dean's Report

Liisa Laycock —

Kia Ora, Talofa, Malo E Lelei, Kia Orana, Kamusta, Hei. Welcome to the chilly side of Term 2! As always…. we are winding up to make the most of every learning opportunity!

The last few weeks have seen all wānanga classes move into tackling numeracy for 2 hours each week. A focus on times tables and basic facts through the Manga High and Timetables.co.nz programmes has challenged and extended knowledge and capabilities in a fun and interesting way.

An introduction to STEAM kete was floated on Friday with Hornby 2050 being the theme. This is an opportunity for students to streamline their creative side and look for solutions to address some of our biggest challenges such as climate change and new technologies. Watch this space.

Kiwi Kaha and STARS programmes continue with many of our students taking up the opportunity to get involved with the Drop for Youth bungy jump raising funds for the Graeme Dingle Foundation which support several programmes that our tamariki are involved in. As the days get cooler, a reminder that school jackets and jerseys can be worn. We encourage students to be prepared for the chill and suggest if a jacket or jersey is an issue to please contact your child’s Wānanga teacher.

A reminder also that school starts at 8.30am and it is an expectation that all students are in
Formtime on time. If your tamariki is absent from school, please contact the school office via phone call, text, app, or email.

If there are concerns or an issue has arisen at school that you would like to discuss, it is important that you contact your child’s Wānanga advisor through email or a call to school. If you feel you require further clarification or support after you have spoken with them, then please contact me (Dean) and then Mrs Karen Wheeler (Deputy Principal). We thank you for the continued support from whānau in keeping this consistency going between home and school and see it as invaluable for the success of our learners here at Hornby High School.
