13 Reasons Why

Sarah Kavanagh —

Season 2 of '13 Reasons Why' is coming on Friday 18th May. The first series was very popular, but left a significant number of viewers feeling distressed and in need of support.

However, most young viewers said the series accurately represented the issues they were facing, so it's important for us to korero with each other instead of shutting the conversation down.

The Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand have resources and information to ensure those in need know where to go for help:

Here are their top tips for caregivers/adults who are supporting young people:

1. Don't ban the show. Young people are likely to find other ways to watch it, but won't feel able to talk to you if they are upset or concerned about what they've seen.
2. Have open and honest conversations. Respect young people's opinions, even when you don't agree. Ask them questions that guide them to think critically about what they are watching, such as "Did Hannah deserve to die to teach other people a lesson?"
3. Watch it together if you can (if that's not possible, try to watch it yourself or read a recap on line).
4. You don't have to have all the answers. You can find them out together!
