Closure of the Hornby Technology Centre on the former Branston Intermediate site

John Simons —

The end of the 2018 school year marks the closure of the Hornby Technology Centre. This was formerly the technical department of Branston Intermediate situated at 35 Amyes Road, Hornby.

Year 7 & 8 students (Form 1 and 2 in the early days) have learnt practical life skills on the site for a total of 47 years since the opening of Branston Intermediate in 1971.

Many thousands of students from local and other schools in the south west Christchurch area have attended classes at the centre where they have learnt to be creative and have developed valuable life skills in the hard materials workshops, foods, and textiles rooms.

A number of the technology teachers have worked at the centre over the years, with two current teachers Mr R. Harwood and Mr J. Simons having a total of 63 years service between them on this site.

From the start of 2019,  students will be attending Technology classes at Hornby High School in the new technology facilities which have recently been completed as a part of the Hornby High School rebuild.
