Chromebooks and Laptops.

We require all students to have their own digital device for learning from the start of 2019. For students in Years 7-11, the preferred device is a chromebook. Students in Years12 & 13 may prefer to bring a laptop. The important thing is that the device should have a good keyboard, be charged up and ready to use at school every day. These are now essential devices for every student.

We no longer have a preferred supplier. You can buy a good chromebook from the usual retail outlets or you can buy online from Cyclone at http://www.cyclone.co.nz/byod . Choose Hornby High School from the drop down menu. The password is hhbyod.

The important thing is that the chromebook is robust. Well looked after, you should expect a chromebook to last up to 5 years – but they do need careful looking after. Acer C730 is our preferred model with at least 4GB RAM, but other brands will have similar specifications. The Google licence is now supplied free and can be installed at school. The office has a pamphlet which provides more details.

Economical Broadband Internet

If you need a very affordable broadband internet deal please ask at the Hornby Library. They can help you sign up to Skinny through the ‘Spark Jump’ scheme. This gives you 30GB of data for $10 prepaid. The modems are free and you will be shown how to set up the system. It’s easy!

Passion Projects

The Year 7-10 classes continue normally until the end of term except for Monday afternoons and all day Thursday when all students will be involved in a Passion Project. Students and teachers will work in mixed groups on a project that really excites them. This is another example of the Hornby High School teachers trying new ways of teaching and learning. We think your children will have fun.
