Year 13 Dean's Report

Chris McLaren —

Tena koe, Kia orana, Talofa lava, Mālō e lelei, Bula, Nǐ hǎo, Namaste, Kumusta, Xin chào, Salaam Alaikum, peace be with you.

Thank you to the Prefects who organised and ran a very successful Red Nose Day. They put a lot of effort into baking goods to raise money for this worthy cause.

This is the last full term of learning for our Year 13 students. Senior Prizegiving is on Monday 9 November which means that students have 12 weeks of learning left and so they need to keep up to date with assessments and learning. Many teachers are concerned that students are on cruise mode and not working to their full potential. Please encourage your young person to not give up on themselves, come to school on time and do their personal best in all subjects.

It is also helpful that you check in with them, and use the school app to monitor your young person’s progress. I am always available and happy to send data through to you.

Here is a link to the timetable for the end of year exams. https://www.nzqa.govt.nz/assets/qualifications-and-standards/qualifications/ncea/exams-and-portfolios/examination-timetable.pdf

Students who are applying for University or courses next year need to ensure that they get their applications in before the due date. I strongly recommend students taking up the free fees offers that are available for 2021. If students know they want to work full time next year, then if they have level 3 they should start looking now. With Covid-19, the world of work is changing, and news reports are suggesting that younger people are the ones who are finding it hardest to gain full time employment. This is why I feel a course is worth enrolling in as it gives young people a reason to get up and get going each day, plus it can lead to employment opportunities.

School Formal

The formal committee is working tirelessly to ensure that this will be a night to remember. I trust students make the most of the opportunity and have a fun filled evening.

The formal is very popular and all tickets have been sold.

Any concerns or questions you may have, please feel free to contact me at any time. ml@hornby.school.nz.
